Jalop Overlords. Why not a post comparing various CVTs on the market today?

There are some good ones, some bad ones and some terrible ones. Guaranteed page hits and thousands of mouth-breathers posting about how cvts are the devils transmission.

Also, the new honda accord has a very decent cvt. Just saying.

Edit: Epic roadtrip-review idea! Hardibird, Orlove, Patrick, Travis and Torch each drive one and last man standing at the end of the trip gets crowned CVT King!

I've only driven Nissan CVTs attached to 4-bangers. Mostly as rental cars, and my gf used to have an '08 Sentra.

'08 Sentra - tolerable except when trying to hold a steady 65+ mph speed on the highway w/o cruise control
'11 Sentra - mostly tolerable
'12 Altima - mostly tolerable
'13 Altima - horrendous

The nissan ones are the ones mostly to blame for the bad name of these, mostly because they were something of pioneers in mas produced CVT's

The '13 Altima, the worst of the bunch, was so bad because it actively tried to fight against accelerating when you're already up to speed.

It's the most recent rental car I had, on a trip to visit my family in DC & Maryland a couple months ago. I drove all around the city and suburbs, and was consistently infuriated by that car.

I would gently step on the gas to speed up, the revs would climb for a moment, make a WAHHHNG sound, then the transmission would race to the tallest possible ratio and completely cancel out any acceleration.

The only way to make that car speed up was to floor it. The only way to not want to destroy the car was to say WAHHHNG along with the engine, although by the end of the trip my gf got pretty annoyed with me doing that.

I like this idea.

Shoot, I'd help test this idea if anyone wants to get me a lot of whirring-bee-driven things to hoon.
